Fjords are narrow inlets from the sea into the coast of Norway. They are quite deep and permit the passage of large ocean going cargo and passenger ships. Fjords are the result of glacial action, some are quite wide in places. They create great natural harbors. There are also fjords in New Zealand, Canada and Alaska, but the name is Norwegian. Here is a beautiful view painted by Norwegian artist Conrad Selmyhr (1877-1944) of a steam ship traversing a fjord in Norway.
