Grenville Richard Redmond was born in1871 at Philadelphia. His family moved to California while he was a child. At the age of three, he became deaf and received his education at a school for the deaf. He early demonstrated a talent for painting. After his schooling, he received a scholarship that allowed him to study at the Academy Julian in France. While in France, he was successful in having his painting "Matin d' Hiver" (Winter Morning) accepted for the Paris Salon.
In 1898 Redmond returned to California and changed his first name from Grenville to Granville. Redmond worked as an illustrator, but worked towards become a full time artist. He married Carrie Ann (who was also deaf) and they had three children. During this time he became friends with Charlie Chaplin and appeared in several movies with him, including "City Lights"!
Redmond traveled all about the state of California, was a founder of the Impressionist movement there, his works are in many collections and museums. He passed away in 1935.
